Race Conversations FAQ

  1. Why a conversation about Race?

Singapore is home to a multi-racial heritage where people of different races learn to live together harmoniously. The national pledge “regardless of race, language and religion” is a powerful adage to the continuous efforts to celebrate racial harmony in the little red dot. This conversation serves as an initiative to contribute to such efforts, with personal anecdotes and questions addressing the social interactions in Singapore.

  2. Is this funded by the Government?

In a nutshell, yes. The project is funded partially by Our SG Fund which was created to support meaningful projects lead by passionate Singaporeans—projects that build national identity or meet social and community needs. This umbrella fund is made up of supporting funds from the Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth (MCCY), Tote Board (Singapore Totalisator Board) and the Singapore Centre for Social Enterprise (raiSE).

  3. What does the conversation entail?

During the 1-hour recording session, you will be seated facing your partner. Subsequently, each of you will take turns asking and answering questions for each other. That is all we need, your honest best for an hour of your time.

  4. How do you apply?

You may apply to participate in this series by yourself or together with a friend at our form below. If you're applying as an individual, you need to only fill up the details of Participant 1. If you're applying with a friend, please fill up both Participant 1 and Participant 2 forms. A producer will contact you to find out more about you and your partner or pair you accordingly if you’ve applied alone.

  5. What are the questions being asked? What if I am uncomfortable asking/answering the questions?

The questions will revolve around your stories and experiences being of a certain race and your daily interactions with people of other races around you. There are no right or wrong answers.

Some of the questions you might be asked include:

What was it like growing up in a multiracial country like Singapore?
What experiences would you not have if you weren't ________ (insert your race)?
How do we achieve a better understanding of each other in Singapore?

We advise you to be as candid as possible during the conversation. If there are questions you are not comfortable with, you are at absolute liberty not to ask/answer it. Be yourself and, in the right spirit, answer to your best abilities.

We will be showing you the final video before we release it publicly so that everyone can be on the same page.
